CHAPTER ELEVEN

Zane

The week flies by. Being with Cassie has the effect of making time melt away. I've come to realize I'm going to have to take Cassie’s lead and set a schedule for myself or I'm never going to get anywhere with the concept build out and proposal.

Friday after Cassie gets off work, we drive to the Portland airport to fly down to San Francisco. As we walk into the building, towing our bags behind us, I'm overcome with a wave of gratitude. I’ve flown down for board meetings so many times over the past years by myself that I have grown to despise the trip. Just having Cassie on this trip with me changes absolutely everything. I’m really tired of being alone, on my own and untethered and now I feel a part of something, a ‘we.’

“I don’t think I’ve ever taken more than a road trip with someone I’ve dated,” I tell Cassie as we wait in line for security.

“I flew home once with my college boyfriend to meet my folks, but I wouldn’t call that a fun trip. It was awkward. My parents made him sleep on the couch and barely talked to him.”

“Good, this trip will be a first for both of us then. Do you like traveling?”

“I don’t know. The only trips I’ve ever taken were with my parents and I don’t think anyone really enjoys those after about ten years old. As an adult the only traveling I did was to and from grad school really.”

“That’s no good. We’ll have to make it a point to go on a real vacation together at some point soon.”

“God, that would be amazing. I haven’t been on a real vacation in…ever actually.”

“You’re amazing,” I say leaning over the armrest to kiss Cassie on the cheek.

We board and are seated quickly as I had purchased seats in first class. I can't believe I’m already having a great time and all we’ve done is board the plane. Looking over at Cassie who's fiddling in her carryon for snacks, I chuckle a bit. I doubt she has ever flown first class because snacks are served in first class as are drinks.

“Do you want some?” she asks holding out her spicy Chex mix.

“No, thanks, beautiful.”

“I can't believe you booked us in first class for a two-hour flight!”

“Why not travel in comfort when you can?”

“You are already spoiling me.”

“I booked us a hotel with a view of the San Francisco Bay too. I have to spoil my girl when I can,” I say kissing Cassie on the nose. She has the cutest nose. “I have some ideas of places I want to show you, but is there anything you want to be sure to do while we are in the city?”

“I think it would be cool to hit an independent book store that specializes in books from the city. I always try to do that when I travel somewhere new.”

“I should have anticipated that one, noted. Okay, what else?”

“Maybe Fisherman’s Wharf or China Town? I was sorry to have missed those when I came last time.
